England World Cup-winning 'keeper Gordon Banks dies

England's World Cup-winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks has died at the age of 81, his former club Stoke have announced.

Gordon Banks is probably best known for a wonder save he produced to deny football legend Pele in a 1970 World Cup group match in Mexico that Brazil won 1-0.

A bout of illness ruled Banks out of the quarter-final clash against West Germany, who gained revenge for their 1966 final defeat as Peter Bonetti deputised.

Banks started his career at Chesterfield and went on to make 510 league appearances during his career, winning 73 caps for England - with the highlight coming in 1966.

"I had the privilege of becoming good friends with him over the years because we are from the same era and he was an opponent of mine on many occasions".

'He will be deeply missed and our thoughts are with his family at this very sad time.

He's also the glory of world football.

One of the draw assistants at the Russian Federation 2018 Final Draw, Banks shone at both Leicester City and Stoke City, making over 600 appearances between both clubs and winning the League Cup with the both.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino paid tribute to the England legend.

The England team Twitter account posted a video of the save on Tuesday.

Arguably one of the greatest shot-stoppers of his generation, Gordon Banks amassed 73 caps for the England national team in an global career which spanned close to a decade. Banks helped to draw the teams for the 2018 World Cup, attending a ceremony the previous year at the Kremlin in Moscow.

Banks retired from the professional game at the age of 34 following a road accident which cost him the sight in his right eye, although he later returned briefly to football in America.

On learning of his old mucker's passing, the 78-year-old Brazilian icon took to Facebook to share his thoughts, revealing that he remains "glad" Banks saved his shot, for it kick-started decades of friendship between the two.

"We've been expecting his, he has been poorly for a number of weeks but it's a very sad day for us, we love him so much", said Coates.

"I can't speak about other eras, but he must be one of, if not the, greatest goalkeeper of all time".
