All-Star J.T. Realmuto traded from Marlins to Philadelphia for 3 players

All-Star J.T. Realmuto traded from Marlins to Philadelphia for 3 players

The Marlins, well, they're the laughingstock of baseball, years away from relevance. The Phillies weren't an offensive party by any means - 22nd in runs - but they did score 88 more runs than Miami.

Phillies general manager Matt Klentak was delighted to have landed "the best catcher in baseball", telling reporters via a conference call, as quoted on MLB.com: "I think the upgrade is pretty significant".

The Phillies have shown interest in Realmuto, who demanded a trade from the organization after the 2018 season, since July of a year ago.

J.T. Realmuto #11 of the Miami Marlins in action against the New York Yankees at Marlins Park on August 21, 2018 in Miami, Florida. As I wrote in the latest edition of Phillies Nuggets, Realmuto, already the best offensive catcher in the sport, could actually get even better with his move out of Miami.

"We've heard nothing but outstanding things about J.T. Realmuto and his worth ethic and his makeup and his leadership, the type of teammate he is", Klentak said.

At Prospects1500 he is ranked as a Tier 1 player meaning: Players with high expectations of both making the majors and playing at an All-Star level for a number of years. Electric stuff. Three pitch mix. Alfaro struck out in 40 percent of his at bats last season while walking just 18 times in 377 plate appearances. Miami also received $250,000 worldwide bonus pool money.

Hill said trading Realmuto to a team within the same division was never a concern.

Backed forces launch 'decisive battle' against last Islamic State enclave in Syria
But the group steadily lost ground and its two main prizes - the Syrian city of Raqqa and Iraq's Mosul - fell in 2017. He later wrote on Twitter that the battle had started and the enclave would "be cleared soon".

"This doesn't take us out of the free agent market by any stretch", Klentak said Thursday.

Miami made Sanchez a necessity for a deal to get done. He smashed 21 home runs to go along with 74 runs batted in and a.277 average.

Jorge Alfaro-25 years old, not arbitration eligible until 2021, and not projected to hit free agency until 2024-had a successful season last year for the Phillies. He still, however, remains a plus defensive catcher with excellent speed for the position (12 stolen bases in 2016).

He is the fifth big-name player the Marlins have traded away since Derek Jeter and Bruce Sherman bought the team and launched a rebuild.

The Phillies remain confident that they will land one of the big free agents this season and they made their intent clear about being ready to spend "stupid" money when they met the Marlins' demands when so many other teams were unwilling.

Needless to say, after seeing the All-Star trio of Giancarlo Stanton, Christian Yelich, and Marcell Ozuna unceremoniously disposed of with little to speak of in return, Marlins fans (yes, a few of us actually exist) were a little non-plussed.
