U.S. medic quarantined in Nebraska for possible Ebola exposure

An American who may have been exposed to the lethal disease Ebola while in the Democratic Republic of Congo arrived in Nebraska to be monitored, the medical facility revealed Saturday. The quarantine could last up to two weeks.

This person has no Ebola symptoms but will be monitored for up to 2 weeks in Omaha, Nebraska, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). If it is necessary, though, the individual will be transferred to the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit, where regular updates will be provided.

"This person may have been exposed to the virus but is not ill and is not contagious", Ted Cieslak, an infectious diseases specialist at the medical center, told Politico.

The person, who was transported to the U.S.by private plane and transported by vehicle, will be monitored by federal, state and county public health officials, according to the statement. A spokesperson for the State Department, which arranged the doctor's travel, said the doctor was moved safely and securely.

Ebola - also known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever - is a rare and deadly virus that can be spread through human contact with bodily fluids and causes severe bleeding and organ failure.

The Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo is the second worst ever and has killed 356 of the 585 people infected since it began six months ago, according to the World Health Organization.

Russian Federation seals off Crimea-Ukraine border wall
On December 18, the Ukrainian government extended its embargo on the import of Russian foods until the end of 2019. The European Union and the USA condemned Russia's action, though neither responded with new sanctions.

The person isn't displaying symptoms of Ebola but was evacuated to ensure quick access to specialized care if symptoms develop. The individual will be monitored in a secure area inaccessible to the public and patients. Early symptoms include headache, fever, chills and muscle pain.

At the moment, from the deadly disease died of 360 people, more than 200 have been treated.

While this exposed individual isn't officially a patient, hospital officials said they will be honoring the person's request for privacy.

Updates on the person's condition aren't anticipated "unless the need arises", the facility said.

The center where the physician is being held has experience treating Ebola patients and has a biocontainment unit to address symptoms if they develop. In 2015, several others were monitored after exposures, none of whom developed the disease.
