Turkey Stands By Deal To Buy Russian Missiles, Attack Kurds In Syria

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday that a full USA troop withdrawal from Syria announced by President Donald Trump last month will go ahead despite widespread criticism.

But there are no easy answers.

"This is a story made up by the media", said Pompeo, underscoring Washington's continuing commitment to preventing any resurgence by IS. The demand, which Bolton said came from Trump, immediately drew criticism from Turkish officials.Bolton concluded his visit to Turkey with more than two hours of discussions with officials Tuesday, but without meeting Erdogan.National Security Council spokesman Garrett Marquis said Erdogan called Bolton's Turkish counterpart, Ibrahim Kalın, during their meeting and told him to send his regards to Bolton.

After meeting Bolton on Tuesday, Kalin also urged Washington to take back all the weapons provided to Syrian Kurdish militia forces.

That includes Syria, where Iran has had a growing role in supporting the Syrian regime.

"It's one thing for the government to be very confident that an individual joined or tried to join ISIS", Joshua Geltzer, a senior counterterrorism official in the Obama administration, told the Associated Press this week.

Meanwhile, the prisoner problem is only growing worse.

A state-run Russian television station reported that Russian military police were patrolling the outskirts of the town of Manbij, where USA soldiers remain, in a buffer zone separating Syrian forces and "militants" outside of the town.

National security adviser John Bolton, speaking in Israel on Sunday, said the administration would delay the withdrawal until Turkey assures the safety of Kurdish fighters and ISIS is defeated. This person said that "there will definitely be a fight" between Turkey and the Kurdish forces once the Americans leave Syria. Turkey views the Kurds in Syria as an extension of the Kurds who have been fighting Turkey for their own independent state for decades, the Kurdish Workers Party (PKK).

Pompeo denounced the vision outlined by President Barack Obama in a speech he gave in Cairo in 2009 in which he spoke of "a new beginning" for US relations with countries in the Arab and Muslim world.

The US "will use diplomacy and work with our partners to expel every last Iranian boot" from Syria and will bolster efforts "to bring peace and stability to the long-suffering Syrian people", he said. They have also paved the way for the formation of a constitutional committee.

His words echo a refrain that has emerged in the Turkish media that United States administration officials are blocking their own president from following through on policy decisions. "Our boys, our young women, our men, they're all coming back and they're coming back now", Trump said at the time.

The US originally announced the decision to withdraw forces within 30 days.

US-led coalition forces have provided air power and other support to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in its operation to flush out IS from the last rump of its now-defunct "caliphate".

However, Palestinian diplomatic sources have repeatedly said they do not like what Kushner has been indicating, leading the Palestinian Authority (PA) to suspend contacts with Trump's envoy.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo meets with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi in Cairo on January 10, 2019.

"These questions are hard enough, if you know the timeline on which you're making them if you know what the United States involvement will or won't be over that timeline", Geltzer said.

The program has identified more than 73 Americans, by their legal names, who are known to have joined jihadist groups.

Turkey considers the Kurdish forces terrorists and has vowed to attack them in north-east Syria as soon as the Americans leave.

According to the diplomats, many Arab capitals, especially Saudi Arabia which has been funding the United States troop presence, will not want a situation that could allow for a wider Iranian presence in Syria.
