Trump says no emergency declaration to end US shutdown

Rep. Andy Biggs said Saturday night that President Trump is "seriously considering" declaring a national emergency over the situation at the U.S. -Mexico border.

Asked by Fox News why he did not immediately declare a national emergency to secure the funds without congressional approval, Mr Trump said he wanted to give opposition Democratic lawmakers more time to strike a deal.

Trump sees the declaration of an emergency as a last resort and still hopes to make a deal with Democrats to reopen the federal government, Graham said, adding that he spoke to Trump earlier in the day.

Both Democrats and Republicans agree that the US-Mexican border presents challenges, but Mr Trump has turned his single-minded push for more walls into a crusade that opponents say is a stunt to stoke xenophobia in his right-wing voter base.

Trump fired off a series of tweets pushing back against the notion that he doesn't have a strategy to end what became the longest government shutdown in USA history when it entered its 22nd day Saturday.

About 800,000 federal workers missed their pay for the first time Friday, as impacts spread from the stoppage that began on December 22.

But the South Carolina Republican said Trump wants a deal first.

Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic leader in the House of Representatives, said money should be spent on border security but not on walls. "That's why I'm depressed".

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., said on CNN that he would "hate to see" Trump declare a national emergency to end to his administration's stalemate with Democrats over a border wall.

Meanwhile, Democrats remained resolute that Trump and Republican lawmakers should end the shutdown before rejoining the debate over how to best secure USA borders and reform immigration laws.

But there was another election, in November, and the outcome of that is that Democrats now control the House and they refuse to give Trump money for a wall.

Democrats oppose such a declaration but may be powerless to stop it.

Milstead steered clear of partisan finger-pointing, but he pushed back against critics who say the wall will not work.

Trump reminded that building a wall on the Mexican border was one of his main campaign promises.

Gingrich told host John Catsimatidis, while a compromise is being sought to end the historically long government shutdown, it has long odds as Sen.

Trump has told advisers he believes the fight for the wall, even if he never gets money for it, is a political win for him. He again sought to blame Democrats, who he said were "everywhere but Washington as people await their pay".

"We want Congress to do its job", the president said in a discussion on border security at the White House. President, if you want to go down the emergency path, I stand with you.' He said just 30 minutes ago, 'That's my last - last option. "The Republican-controlled Senate and a handful of senators will make that decision".

Later on Saturday, he telephoned Fox News Channel's Justice with Judge Jeanine Pirro from the White House. We can end this easily - We need a Steel Barrier or Wall.

Oscar Murillo, an aerospace engineer at Nasa, posted his $0 cheque on Twitter and said he had actually lost money because of mandatory deductions. Miami International Airport on Saturday closed its least-used concourse due to a shortage of TSA officers, according to the Miami Herald.

Philip Rucker, the White House bureau chief at the Washington Post, went on to say that Trump's latest tweets about the shutdown appeared to be in response to Rucker's appearance on NBC's Today Saturday morning. Senate Democrats, whose votes would be needed to advance such legislation, have not indicated whether they would back it because they want the government to reopen instead.
