Syrian state media: Anti-aircraft fires on 'enemy targets' near Damascus

Al Arabiya quoted the Syrian state news agency SANA as stating that one of the airport warehouses was hit during the attack. It claimed that Syrian air defences have foiled and countered "hostile objects" over Damascus on Friday night.

An AFP correspondent in Damascus heard several loud explosions.

Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV said the attack was broader than usual, targeting areas ranging from the eastern Damascus suburb of Dmeir to Al-Kiswah south of capital all the way to the village of Dimas in the west near the Lebanon border.

The Israeli jets reportedly crossed over to Syria through Lebanese airspace after having heavily roamed over Lebanon on Thursday.

The last such missile attack was carried out on December 25, 2018, during which the Israeli warplanes fired missiles on Syrian military depots in the western countryside of Damascus from inside the Lebanese airspace. It was the most extensive airstrike since a Russian intelligence plane was accidentally shot down during an Israeli strike.

The Jerusalem Post quotes "Syrian opposition" as saying that the Israeli Air Force attacked the bases of Iranian militias and Assad's forces southwest of Damascus.

According to the military source, the Syrian air defenses were "immediately" engaged overnight after a number of Israeli fighter jets came "from the direction of the Galilee (and) fired several missiles towards the vicinity of Damascus".

Syria on Saturday said it filed complaints with the UN Security Council and with UN Secretary-General Antonia Guterres over alleged Israeli airstrikes on Friday near Damascus.

A senior Israeli official said in September Israel had carried out more than 200 attacks against Iranian targets in Syria in the last two years.
