SpaceX Layoffs to Affect 10% of Workforce Across US

SpaceX Layoffs to Affect 10% of Workforce Across US

SpaceX will lay off about 10 per cent of its more than 6,000 employees, a person familiar with the matter said on Friday. "Either of these developments, even when attempted separately, have bankrupted other organizations", SpaceX said in a statement.

In an email written by President Gwynne Shotwell obtained by The LA Times, employees were informed of the cuts and told "this was a very hard but necessary decision".

The email by Shotwell states the company will be offering a minimum of eight weeks pay, resume help, and job searches to the laid-off workers.

The company said it will "part ways" with some of its employees as it faces "extraordinarily hard challenges ahead".

A company source says SpaceX remains financially strong and can continue to "manufacture and launch at a reliable cadence in the years ahead".

SpaceX's website says it now has about 6,000 employees, meaning a 10 percent reduction would affect roughly 600 people.

SpaceX, which has developed reusable rockets and is working on Starship for a future anticipated Mars mission, gets most of its income from launching payloads for both private companies and the USA government.

That same month, the Elon Musk-led company plans a "hopper test" of its Mars spaceship prototype, which is being assembled in south Texas.

No astronauts will be on board for this demonstration mission, but this is the first launch of SpaceX's Crew Dragon, a spacecraft that will soon transport astronauts to the International Space Station.

SpaceX has a number of major launches coming this year, too, including two of its mega Falcon Heavy rockets and the launch of its own satellites, Starlink, which are meant to provide high-speed broadband Internet across the globe. It was the company's 21st launch of 2018.
