Poland arrests Chinese Huawei exec, Pole on spying charges

Poland arrests Chinese Huawei exec, Pole on spying charges

Polish media reports that a former high-ranking intelligence official in Poland was also arrested on Tuesday. USA officials are claiming Huawei is working with the Chinese government, allowing its equipment to be used by the government for spying on Western adversaries.

"Huawei's biggest challenge is to prove to its partners across the world that the quality of its cyber-security services is second to none and that there's no possibility of backdoor intrusion", said Ghernatoui at the Swiss Cybersecurity Advisory and Research Group.

This week's detention of Wang Weijing follows the December arrest of Huawei's chief financial officer in Canada and U.S. efforts to blacklist the company internationally over security concerns. "The case has been conducted for a long time and carefully", he told Polish press agency PAP.

An official at the Chinese Embassy in Warsaw says China attaches "great importance to the detention" of a Chinese citizen in Poland who has been detained and charged with espionage and that a representative of the embassy has met with officials at Poland's Foreign Ministry to discuss the case.

Huawei said in a statement that Wang's "alleged actions have no relation to the company".

The accusations adds a new front for Huawei, as it battles allegations that its Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou conspired to defraud banks to unwittingly clear transactions linked to Iran, in violation of United States sanctions.

The arrest deals a brutal blow to the Chinese company.

A LinkedIn profile for Wang Weijing showed he has worked for Huawei's Polish division since 2011 and previously served as attaché to the Chinese General Consul in Gdansk from 2006-2011. The country's security services searched the offices of Huawei as well as Orange Polska, public television said.

Steve Buscemi's filmmaker wife of 31 years, Jo Andres, has died
Steve once said he was his wife's biggest fan. "She paints, she makes films, she has done performance", he told the Independent . According to her website , Andres first became known for her acclaimed "film/dance/light performances" in NYC during the 1980s.

The Huawei arrest saga continues as another Huawei employee faces up to 10 years in jail after a recent arrest in Poland.

The offices of both companies were also searched, with security agents seizing documents and electronic data.

Huawei's business is thriving in many places.

Huawei is a leader in the development of next-generation "5G" mobile networks and a key player in building them in Europe.

Orange Polska said in a statement security services had on Tuesday gathered materials related to an employee, whom it did not identify.

It's not clear if its Polish unit has followed suit.

The arrest is the latest in a line of incidents to rock the company, including the arrest of CFO Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver and most recently and the departure of Huawei Canada's senior vice president of corporate affairs, Scott Bradley.

The US has warned for nearly a year that Huawei, a Chinese tech giant, might be partnering with Beijing's intelligence agencies.
