Julian Castro to announce 2020 presidential campaign decision

The former mayor of San Antonio and HUD secretary under President Obama officially announced his candidacy Saturday, framing it in the context of immigration: "When my grandmother got here [from Mexico] nearly a hundred years ago, I'm sure she never could have imagined that just two generations later, one of her grandsons would be serving as a member of the United States Congress and the other would be standing with you here today to say these words: I am a candidate for President of the United States of America", he told supporters in his hometown of San Antonio, per USA Today.

Introduced by his twin brother U.S. Rep. Joaquín Castro of Texas and his mother, who said his son believes in the "infrastructure of opportunity... that every family should be given".

"When my grandmother got here nearly 100 years ago", he said, "I am sure she never could have imagined that two generations later, one of her grandsons would be serving as a member of the United States Congress and the other would be standing here with you here today to say these words: I am a candidate for President of the United States of America".

Castro's national profile rose sharply in 2012 when he became the first Latino to deliver a keynote speech at the Democratic national nominating convention.

Mr Castro made his announcement in his home town of San Antonio, Texas, where he was mayor from 2009 to 2014.

He added that his grandmother Victoria would surely have been amazed when she arrived from Mexico in 1922 - she went on to work as a maid and a cook - had she known that one grandchild would end up in Congress and the other as a presidential candidate. Aside from that, Castro doesn't have much to point to in terms of accomplishments or national name recognition.

Kevin Hart on Hosting Oscars: 'I Can't Do It This Year'
Speaking on Good Morning America yesterday, Hart confirmed: "I'm not hosting the Oscars this year". Please take your negative energy and put it into something constructive. "Have a handsome day".

Two days after the President visited the border to promote his promised wall, Mr Castro mocked Mr Trump for claiming that the United States faces an "invasion" from its ally to the south. On top of that, keep in mind that Castro was a Hillary endorser in the 2016 race. Tim Kaine of Virginia, Castro said Clinton's loss and Trump's victory was the moment he began considering a run. "Well, I'm not the frontrunner", he said. "For many Americans, a lot changed when Donald Trump got into office".

Castro is in early for what's going to be an extremely crowded Democrat field to figure out who fights against Trump. Joaquin Castro will be chairman of his twin's campaign.

Castro and his team have signaled in the lead up to Saturday's announcement that he will lean into his Mexican-American heritage in a presidential run. He addressed Saturday's crowed in English and Spanish, and a mariachi band performed during the event. The announcement was made across the street from Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where he was baptized as a child, and where he baptized his children. "Donald Trump has failed to uphold the values of our great nation", Castro said.

Castro is aware he lacks the name recognition of potential 2020 rivals or the buzz surrounding O'Rourke, whose flirtations with 2020 have tantalized donors and activists after a close race a year ago against Sen.

"I am just going to be myself", he said. "This community represents America's future: diverse, fast-growing, optimistic". You don't want to get caught in a situation like some of the 2016 Republicans who were forced to debate at the kiddie table because they ran out of room on the main stage.

"I wish my grandmother could be with us to see it", he said.
