Huawei employee among two arrested in Poland over spying allegations

If convicted, the men could face up to 10 years in prison.

The two men were arrested on Tuesday and are suspected of having "worked for Chinese services and to the detriment of Poland", said Polish special services spokesman Stanislaw Zaryn.

The government has evidence that the two suspects "cooperated with the Chinese services" as they conducted espionage against Poland, according to Stanisław Żaryn, spokesman for the special services branch, in a tweet about the case. Both were taken in on spying allegations, but officials said the charges are related to their individual actions and are not linked to the Chinese tech giant.

It added: "Huawei complies with all applicable laws and regulations in the countries where it operates, and we require every employee to abide by the laws and regulations in the countries where they are based".

Polish security forces have arrested a Chinese Huawei employee on allegations of spying.

Huawei has repeatedly denied claims of secret ties to the Chinese government.

Countries like the United States, Australia and Japan have blocked Huawei from building their next-generation, super-fast 5G internet networks.

Reports have shown that the Chinese technology giant circumvented sanctions imposed on Iran and North Korea by providing them with telecommunications equipment that can be used to spy on their populations, otherwise known as "dual use technologies".

The U.S. has been pushing European governments to block Huawei from telecom networks amid a wider dispute over trade between the world's two biggest economies. Mr. Wang did not immediately respond to a request for comment via the social media site.

Orange Poland told The Associated Press on Friday that officials from Poland's Internal Security Agency searched the company's headquarters in Warsaw on Tuesday and that as part of operation "we handed over belongings of one of our employees".

Norway's comments come at a time in the country is seeking to stamp out vulnerabilities in its telecoms networks.

Orange told the AP it did not know if the suspicions against its employee were related to his professional duties and that it was working with the country's security agency. US prosecutors have accused her of misleading banks about transactions linked to Iran, putting the banks at risk of violating USA sanctions. The company has been blocked in the US since 2012 over fears that its equipment is a security risk, and a year ago Australia, New Zealand and Japan instituted their own bans against using Huawei. She was granted bail but remains in Vancouver under 24-hour surveillance.
