Golden State Warriors center DeMarcus Cousins sets date for return from injury

Cousins, though coming off a serious injury and unable to play to start the season, gave the Warriors a fifth star and potentially the best starting lineup in the history of the league.

It made sense from the Pelicans' standpoint, because there's just no guarantee how Cousins will look once he returns to the floor.

With DeMarcus Cousins planning to make his long-awaited Golden State Warriors debut and return from a ruptured Achilles tendon January 18, head coach Steve Kerr has a big decision to make: insert the 28-year-old center immediately into the starting lineup, or ease him back up to speed in a reserve role.

"Yeah I'll start him", Kerr told reporters at a Warriors practice.

Kerr did not confirm that Cousins will start against the Los Angeles Clippers on January 18, saying the team needed to have some "leeway".

"We'll have to play around with him - the minutes, the combinations, the sets". In this picture, Cousins #0 of the Golden State Warriors poses for a picture during the Golden State Warriors media day in Oakland, California, Sept. 24, 2018. "We haven't had a player like him here before", said Kerr. So it will be new; it won't be as simple [as] plug him in and he'll fit right in. "Fortunately we're halfway through the year, we have a lot of games to figure this out", the Warriors coach added.

The Warriors reportedly are hoping Cousins will return when the team faces the Clippers on January 18.

"It was a battle between myself, the training staff, the guys at the top", Cousins said.

The Lakers say James' healing is "progressing", and the four-time NBA MVP will participate in more functional basketball activities during the upcoming week. A lot of ups and downs. "I know our fan base is excited".
