CES 2019: Intel unveils 10nm PC products for AI and 5G

The company announced details on its first volume 10nm Pc processor, Ice Lake. Intel SVP Gregory Bryant rattled off a whole litany of features built into the chips, including native Thunderbolt 3 support, 802.11ax Wi-Fi, and drastically improved graphics performance thanks to the new "Gen11" graphics hardware.

What's perhaps most intriguing about them is that five of the six new chips appear to be part of a brand new F-series of processors, which have removed (or most likely disabled) the integrated graphics chip that nearly every mainstream Intel processor now includes.

Intel's Lakefield motherboard prototype is an imaginative look at how 10nm chips could enable a new generation of devices whose computing guts like the CPU and wireless radios take up a much smaller percentage of interior space.

Lakefield has five cores, merging the 10nm Sunny Cove core with four Intel Atom processor-based cores in a small package. Intel has not produced CPUs with mixed core types before, and the new Lakefield chip can be likened to ARM's heterogenous big.Little strategy. This will be the first to use the Foveros packaging technology to integrate the company's mainstream and low-power CPU cores.

First laptops based on Intel's Project Athena platform will be released in the second of this year. And by advanced, Intel means faster processing, increasing battery life, 5G support and everything backed by Artificial intelligence.

Intel Xeon Scalable processor Intel said it has started shipping next-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, also known as Cascade Lake processor. The result is a smaller board that provides OEMs more flexibility for thin and light form factor design.

Lakefield is expected to be in production this year.

Students and fans of Clemson University celebrate championship
The two teams continued trading haymakers throughout the first half, but Clemson went into the locker room with a 31-16 lead. Coach Dabo Swinney's squad beat Saban and Alabama (14-1) for the second time in three meetings in the CFP title game.

Intel has had well-publicized struggles with the 10nm process.

Intel also unveiled Facebook as one of the project partners. Laptops based on 9th Gen Core processors will hit the market in the second quarter of this year, but no specifications or architecture names were announced.

In October, Intel launched the first set of the 9th Gen Core desktop processors, including the Intel Core i9-9900K processor.

Intel is additionally expanding its system-on-a-chip (SoC) range with a 10nm-based SoC code-named Snow Ridge, which it said was "developed specifically for 5G wireless access and edge computing".

Intel also announced Project Athena, an innovation program and new set of industry specifications developed to help usher in a new class of advanced notebooks created to enable new experiences and capitalize on next-generation technologies, including 5G and AI.

Finally, Intel briefly demoed the Snow Ridge network SoC. The new chip comes with Intel Optane DC persistent memory and Intel DL Boost used to harness AI capabilities.
