At the border, Trump moves closer to emergency declaration

Lindsey Graham, a Republican and close White House ally, said Thursday he doesn't see a way to resolve the shutdown dispute that has paralyzed much of the federal government.

The House of Representatives voted to approve a Senate-passed measure to ensure federal workers furloughed during the ongoing partial government shutdown are paid retroactively when the government reopens, sending the bill to President Trump's desk.

Democratic leaders are unanimously opposed to spending money on any new border barriers -although they have offered $1.3 billion to strengthen existing walls and fences, increase hiring at ports of entry and improve technology at the border.

While scientists warn that the climate crisis will continue to cause increasingly damaging weather events and disasters in USA communities, President Donald Trump made clear Friday his focus on a separate, invented "crisis" as he ordered officials to consider redirecting billions of dollars in disaster relief funds to pay for a wall at the southern US border.

Steelers president: 'Hard to envision' WR Antonio Brown being back
However, Brown will be 31 when the 2019 season kicks off so if the asking price is too high, San Francisco may not be interested. Antonio Brown may not have asked to be traded by the Steelers, but Pittsburgh is certainly entertaining the option.

The Washington Post suggested the White House was laying the groundwork for declaring an emergency that would let Trump build sections of a wall, possibly using funds from the Army Corps of Engineers. Democrats, meanwhile, say they will not fund the wall.

President Trump raised eyebrows on Thursday when he maintained that he had never said Mexico would directly pay for a border wall. Marco Rubio (R-Fl.) telling CNBC, "If today, the national emergency is border security. tomorrow the national emergency might be climate change". The majority has also already been obligated - meaning that it has been spent or a contract has been signed and there would be penalties for cancellation. He claimed his lawyers told him the action would withstand legal scrutiny "100 percent".

Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., the incoming chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, said in an interview that rebuilding the disaster areas is "a way higher priority benefiting the American people than a wasteful wall".

"Siphoning funding from real disasters to pay for a crisis manufactured by the president is wholly unacceptable and the American people won't fall for it", said Velazquez in a statement.
