Alphabet’s board accused of covering up sexual misconduct claims in shareholder lawsuits

Workers were outraged when it emerged in media reports that Android creator Andy Rubin received a $90m severance package when he left the company, and that a severance deal was also reached with Amit Singhal, head of Google's search unit until 2016, despite there being knowledge of the accusations made against them.

The lawsuit claimed that according to the minutes, the payouts for Rubin was approved by board members "since they apparently feared that if they fired Rubin for cause, he would sue Google for wrongful termination and all the tawdry details of sexual harassment by senior executives at Google would become public". "Instead, the company handed him a $90 million exit package, paid in installments of about $2 million a month for four years", the Times continued, adding that Rubin was just "one of three executives that Google protected over the past decade after they were accused of sexual misconduct".

A lawsuit filed by shareholders on Thursday alleged that Alphabet directors were complicit in behaviour that harmed the company by not reporting their executives' behaviour to authorities.

Google's board of directors and executive leadership have been accused of covering up allegations of sexual harassment against former executives.

In November, Google employees around the world staged a coordinated walkout to protest the company's handling of the sexual harassment allegations.

Google chief executive Sundar Pichai apologised previous year to employees for the companies' past handling of sexual misconduct cases and vowed to improve practices.

The plaintiffs ' lawyers claim compensation for the shareholders and a court order, that the Alphabet and Google the companies to improve management and internal controls for the protection of employees and investors. Meanwhile, Sundar Pichai, Google Chief Executive Officer, issued an apology past year to employees.

Frank Bottini, an attorney representing one shareholder, said the lawsuit wanted to prompt action at the highest level in Alphabet. The lawsuit seeks damages, overall improvement of oversight of sexual harassment, a cessation of nondisclosure agreements for employees and better corporate governance frameworks.

The cases-James Martin v. Lawrence Page et al and Northern California Pipe Trades Pension Plan v. John Hennessey et al-were both filed in San Mateo County Superior Court.
