U.S. conducts 'extraordinary' observation flight to reaffirm commitment to Ukraine

The goal of the flight is in part to promote transparency in military activities.

A total of 25 USA military personnel - eight Defense Threat Reduction Agency personnel and a 17-person aircrew from the 55th Wing out of Offut Air Force Base, Nebraska - participated in Thursday's flight.

Normally these flights are arranged well in advance.

"Nobody knows tomorrow where Putin [will] make a decision to protect Russian interests", he said, adding that Ukraine needs military and technical upgrades - "including the supply the lethal weapons to help us to protect our country" from a possible ground operation. But the treaty permits "extraordinary", or unscheduled, flights if two participating members agree.

The U.S. has notified Turkey of the plan, which is part of the required process, U.S. officials said.

Ukraine is accusing Russian Federation of keeping up its blockade of the Kerch Strait that links the Black Sea with the Sea of Azov, warning that it will soon send more navy ships through the strait. The most recent was the fast transport ship USNS Carson City, in September.

The US have issued a series of statements pledging Washington's support to Ukraine after the November 25 attack in the Sea of Azov.

Nasa lander captures first sounds of Martian wind
The noise was produced due to the air blowing over the solar panels of the InSight lander as well as the motion of the spacecraft. In a news release , InSight principal investigator Bruce Banerdt said the wind detection was an "unplanned treat".

Ukrainian boats had attempted a provocation in the Sea of Azov a month before the Kerch Strait incident, according to a senior Russian naval official.

The United States has begun making preparations to sail a warship into the Black Sea amid Russia-Ukraine tensions, CNN has reported.

The Pentagon says a US Air Force plane flew a special observation flight over Ukraine in a show of solidarity after Ukraine's naval confrontation with Russian Federation.

Pahon said the plane that was flown over Ukraine on Thursday was an OC-135 observation aircraft with U.S., Canadian, German, French, British, Romanian and Ukrainian observers aboard. He said the flight was requested by the arms control directorate of the Ukrainian General Staff.

A total of 25 U.S. military personnel took part in the flight, including eight Defense Threat Reduction Agency personnel and a 17-person air crew from the 55th Wing out of Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon said.

Pahon said the observation plane left a base near Washington on November 30 and flew in Ukrainian airspace after a stop in Germany.
