Take flu precautions during New Year's: CDC

As of the week ending December 22, nine states are experiencing high flu activity - Alabama, Colorado, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico and SC - as well as New York City.

New York City and 9 states experienced high ILI activity. There have been 11 total flu-related deaths among children during the 2018-2019 season, according to the CDC.

The CDC also reported that the adult vaccination rate also increased, with 45 percent receiving the flu shot, compared to 39 percent past year.

Influenza A viruses have been dominating in the United States since the beginning of October, the CDC said, although influenza B viruses are circulating, as well.

So far this year, there have already been seven pediatric deaths attributed to the flu.

Flu symptoms range from fever, cough to a sore throat and are sudden rather than a slow buildup of symptoms.

In the week ending December 22, 68,148 people sought outpatient or emergency treatment for flu-like symptoms at hospitals and clinics throughout the country, compared with 61,628 people the week before, said Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥), deputy director-general of the CDC. More than 900,000 people were hospitalized and more than 80,000 people died.

During the most recent for which figures were available, 20 patients - 85 percent of whom had not received flu vaccines - developed serious flu complications, Chuang said. Also at high risk are adults 65 and older, pregnant women, residents of long-term care facilities and people with medical conditions including weakened immune systems, asthma, heart disease and diabetes. As per the reports, almost six children have died pertaining to the flu complications in this year alone.

Hand-washing, avoiding close contact, and good health habits can prevent the flu, but the CDC urges that the single best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated every year.

"We want them to be done as early as possible but, if you haven't gotten the flu shot, it is not too late." said family physician Jennifer Caudle, M.D.
