Quora discovers data breach that may affect 100M users

Popular Q&A site Quora suffered a security breach last week with a malicious third party gaining unauthorised access to the site's systems.

Someone's taken a wander through the systems of question-and-answer website Quora, pilfering account details of 100 million users.

Quora said, in a statement emailed to members, that they are now investigating exactly how the breach occurred.

Quora has started notifying users whose data has been compromised, and will log them out of the site "out of an abundance of caution".

The data includes account information, such as name, email address, password, and data imported from linked networks, as well as public content and actions, such as questions, answers, upvotes and comments. The company said it's still looking into the cause of the breach together with a digital forensics firm.

Bush returns to Washington for final time
I loved to hear him surprise people with his wild side - explaining the pure joy he felt as he flew and jumped out of planes. Bush wears socks depicting military jets flying in formation during a Pearl Harbor remembrance ceremony in December 2016.

All Quora users have been logged out and affected users will be forced to change their passwords when they next log in.

While passwords were stolen, Quora said these were protected through encryption and a unique salt for each user, it's a good idea to change your password. They also said that it's "highly unlikely" that the incident will result in identity theft because they don't collect personal information such as credit card or social security numbers.

The breach does not affect question and answers that are written anonymously because Quora does not store the identities of people who post anonymous content, according to the blog. Quora's post said it will log out all affected users, and push a password reset.

Quora also notified law enforcement officials regarding this breach. "We will continue to work both internally and with our outside experts to gain a full understanding of what happened and take any further action as needed".
