People Are Not Happy About Tumblr’s Plan To Ban Adult Content

Similarly, only the original poster is able to appeal to Tumblr if they believe that their contents were mistakenly flagged as adult contents. But CEO Jeff D'Onofrio said in a blog post on Monday that that will be ending on December 17 with the enforcement of a new Community Guidelines policy.

Just last week the Tumblr app was removed from Apple's App Store because of child pornography on the platform, and it is possible that this is the incident that focused the company's mind.

"We recognize Tumblr is also a place to speak freely about topics like art, sex positivity, your relationships, your sexuality and your personal journey", D'Onofrio writes. With the app still missing from the App Store, Tumblr is now set to cut out all adult content, and a statement was put out by the company assuring fans much thought was put into the ban before it was approved.

According to Tumblr's blog post announcing the change, adult content refers to photos, videos or GIFS that show "real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples" as well as any photos, videos, GIFS or illustrations of sexual acts. While some of the content on these blogs may now be in violation of our policies and will be actioned accordingly, the blog owners may choose to post content that is within our policies in the future, so we'd like to provide that option.

Some users are already reporting that their innocent content is being incorrectly flagged by Tumblr's algorithm - no doubt a side-effect of having to moderate such an extensive repository of media. "In doing so, it became clear that without this content we have the opportunity to create a place where more people feel comfortable expressing themselves".

Exemptions to the porn ban include "exposed female-presenting nipples in connection with breastfeeding, birth or after-birth moments, and health-related situations, such as post-mastectomy or gender confirmation surgery". In general, the move seems to have shaken user confidence in Verizon's stewardship of Tumblr, saying that this could be the beginning of the end for the 11-year-old site. Some criticized Tumblr's definition of "adult content", while others warned that Tumblr would lose a significant chunk of its users because of the change.

Nudity related to political free speech, resulting from news coverage, or nudity found in art, will still be allowed, similarly to how it's also allowed on other social media platforms.
