Nebraska medical facility says it's monitoring American possibly exposed to Ebola

The physician, who is not identified for privacy reasons, was privately flown to Omaha, Nebraska, on Saturday afternoon and transported to University of Nebraska Medical Center, officials with the medical center announced Saturday.

Nebraska Medicine, a network of hospitals, clinics and healthcare colleges, together with academic partner UNMC, are among world leaders in the treatment of Ebola, which spreads through contact with bodily fluids and causes hemorrhagic fever with severe vomiting, diarrhea and bleeding.

The physician, who has not been identified due to privacy concerns, returned to Nebraska on Saturday, but doctors say there are now no signs of the deadly virus.

More than 350 people have died in the Congo during the current Ebola crisis, although the World Health Organization says the outbreak doesn't pose an worldwide threat. Two of the three recovered, but one, who had been ill for more than a week before he was evacuated from Sierra Leone, died two days after arriving in Nebraska. About a dozen USA government personnel, including Ebola experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are working on the Ebola response in the Congolese capital of Kinshasa, about 1,000 miles away. Doctors are working with federal, state and county public health officials to monitor the doctor in a secure area separate from the public and other patients. The Ebola virus can not spread to others when a person shows no signs or symptoms of the disease. The hospital also said it will not be providing updates on the person's status unless the person needs to be transferred to the special biocontainment unit. In 2015, several others were monitored after exposures, none of whom developed the disease.

Should any symptons develop, the medical center will activate the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit and start providing regular updats.
