M's send All Star INF Segura to Phillies

Players like Manny Machado and Bryce Harper have been linked to the Phillies over the last couple of months since they were one of the teams in the best position to be able to afford these kind of big-name players.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Phillies have agreed to a deal in principle with the Seattle Mariners for shortstop Jean Segura in exchange for shortstop J.P. Crawford.

The main prize in the deal for Seattle is Crawford, who is just 23 and has a high ceiling as a strong defender with on-base skills. He ranked sixth in the American League in hits (178) and seventh in batting average last season, while also leading the majors in three-hit games (20). He hit the go-ahead 3 run home run for the NL in the All-Star game off Josh Hader. He is owed $34.5 million over the remaining two years on his contract. He is a significant upgrade for the team and a big splash in the off-season for General Manager Matt Klentak. "He gets on base, he does damage at the plate and is quite an underrated first baseman".

The deal will include multiple players and Segura will need to waive his no-trade clause.

Segura is owed $60 million through the 2022 season. The 26-year-old has expressed an interest to stay at shortstop, though his top-two suitors would likely have plans to play him at third base for the next several years. It would be pretty surprising at this point if Segura wasn't with the Phillies before the Winter Meetings, which start next Monday, and it seems like Crawford will be involved.

Segura, 28, hit.304 with 10 home runs, 63 RBIs and a.755 OPS in 632 plate appearances last season with Seattle.
