Keeping playoff hero Eovaldi a risk Red Sox could afford to take

Keeping playoff hero Eovaldi a risk Red Sox could afford to take

The Red Sox are hoping that Eovaldi can maintain the level of performance he showed after coming over from Tampa Bay ahead of last year's trade deadline.

Terms of the deal weren't divulged, but multiple reports peg the deal to be worth $68 million.

But it there's one area in which you can't question Eovaldi as he re-signs with the Red Sox, it's his ability to pitch against Boston's biggest rival, the New York Yankees.

Nathan Eovaldi's first three months with the Red Sox went pretty well, so the pitcher has made a decision to stick around.

Nasa lander captures first sounds of Martian wind
The noise was produced due to the air blowing over the solar panels of the InSight lander as well as the motion of the spacecraft. In a news release , InSight principal investigator Bruce Banerdt said the wind detection was an "unplanned treat".

"We're very happy to have Nathan back with us", Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said in a statement as the deal was announced Thursday. "His performance in the postseason was outstanding, both as a starting pitcher and as a reliever". The hard-throwing righty kept the NY bats at bay, allowing just one run over seven innings in a series-changing 17-1 win in Game 3 of the ALDS.

Eovaldi is still on the right side of 30 years old, but banking on him to stay healthy over the course of a four-year deal is certainly a gamble. He had already pitched in the first two games but still went six innings in Game 3, throwing 97 pitches and allowing just three hits. They weren't going to head into the 2019 campaign with Drew Pomeranz as a projected member of their rotation.

Given his history with Tommy John surgery, a couple teams were reportedly reluctant to go after Eovaldi. He had arthroscopic surgery late in spring training to remove loose bodies in his pitching elbow and did not make his season debut until May 30 - his first major league game since August 10, 2016.
