Einstein's 'God Letter' Auctioned for $2.89m

A handwritten letter in which Nobel physicist Albert Einstein took issue with the concept of religion and his own Jewish faith has sold for almost $US2.9 million ($3.9 million) at auction in NY.

Peter Klarnet, a senior specialist in books and manuscripts at Christie's, described the letter as "one of the definitive statements in the religion vs science debate", in a statement.

According to The Guardian, Einstein wrote to Gutkind in response to his book titled, Choose Life: The Biblical Call to Revolt.

"The word God for me is nothing but the expression of and product of human weakness, the Bible a collection of venerable but still rather primitive legends", the letter reads.

The letter to Gutkind previously sold for $404,000 at Bloomsbury Auctions in London in 2008.

Letter from albert Einstein on matters of religion has sold at auction for $ 2.8 million.

The physicist also muses on his own Jewish identity, writing that it is "like all other religions, an incarnation of primitive superstition".

The physicist signed the letter "A. Einstein".

RBI keeps interest rates unchanged
Barring large unexpected developments, we expect the RBI to remain in the pause mode for the reminder of FY19. If the prevailing SLR is 20% then they will have to invest Rs 200 in Government Securities.

The one-and-a-half-page letter, written in 1954 in German and addressed to the philosopher Eric Gutkind, contains reflections on God, the Bible and Judaism. The legacy of Einstein, including epistolary, is enjoyed by collectors of very high demand.

It fetched nearly double the auction house's predicted price of up to 1.5 million.

The letter instead reached a grand total of $2,892,500 on Tuesday following a four-minute bidding battle between two clients on the phones, setting a world auction record for an Einstein letter.

"And the Jewish people to whom I gladly belong and with whose mentality I have a deep affinity have no different quality for me than all other people", Einstein continued.

Specifically, Einstein did not believe that if there was a God, he answered individual prayers and intervened directly in human affairs.

In his letter, the author of the theory of relativity, who died at the age of 76, did not spare Judaism.

He continued: "As far as my experience goes, they are no better than other human groups, although they are protected from the worst cancers by a lack of power. Otherwise I don't perceive anything elected in them".
