AWS enters blockchain market with 2 dedicated services

Here, the service will be managed from the same console as the VMware Cloud on AWS.

Jassy didn't actually utter the words "hybrid cloud", but it sure sounds like that's what he's describing.

Amazon, which is starting with its own hardware, will deliver and install Outposts at customers' facilities and then provide maintenance, fix the hardware and automatically update the software.

The other product is called Amazon Managed Blockchain, which helps users to easily create and manage scalable blockchain networks through the usage of open-source frameworks such as Hyperledger Fabric and Ethereum.

Running AWS infrastructure on-premises via AWS Outposts will be a truly consistent hybrid experience for the customers. It leverages the same software stack, control plane, API's, and managed service as VMware Cloud on AWS and will be sold, provisioned, operated, and supported by VMware or one of its partners.

"Even though we have a lot of customers that run blockchain on top of us ... we just hadn't seen that many blockchain examples that couldn't just be solved by a database". AWS Outposts will initially come in two variants.

Expanding its partnership with VMware, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced launching its own datacenter hardware on premises through AWS Outposts.

At the AWS re:Invent conference in Las Vegas, Amazon introduced AWS Outposts, its boldest effort yet to take on legacy hardware vendors like Cisco, Dell and Hewlett Packard Enterprise by bringing AWS-branded boxes to traditional data centers.

In both cases, AWS will deliver the racks to customers, install them (if customers prefer), and handle all maintenance and replacement of racks.

"AWS is created to allow customers to scale and innovate", said Dan Plastina, Vice President, Security Services, Amazon Web Services, Inc. This can be compared to the Gsuite offerings from Google which manage company email and data on the search giant's cloud servers, fully centralized.

VMware earlier this month announced VMware Cloud on AWS, which tied together VMware's enterprise class software-defined data centre to the AWS cloud.

"If you look at the last couple of years, we hardly get through conversations with companies without talking in some significant part about machine learning", AWS CEO Andy Jassy told journalists at a press briefing at the event. "So, we tried to reimagine what customers really wanted when running in hybrid mode, and developed AWS Outposts".

Pat Gelsinger, chief executive officer, VMware, who joined Jassy on stage at re:Invent said, "VWware Cloud on AWS broke the barriers between the datacentre and the cloud by combining the best of the private cloud and public cloud in the AWS cloud". "AWS Security Hub enhances our existing capabilities to assist customers with their considerations regarding web application security, network vulnerability scanning, log correlation and reporting on AWS".
