Trump's Republicans hold on to Senate

Democrats seized control of the lower house of Congress in midterm elections Tuesday (Nov 6), dealing a stern rebuke to Donald Trump nearly two years into his polarizing, rollercoaster presidency.

"I think the public will repudiate him [Trump] by voting in a Democratic-controlled House of Representative, because they do want a check".

Missouri is extremely close for the President, where 51% approve and 48% disapprove and Republican Josh Hawley holds a commanding lead over incumbent Sen.

In suburban Virginia, Democrat Jennifer Wexton ousted incumbent Republican Barbara Comstock, while another Democrat, Donna Shalala, seized a Republican district in Florida.

Republicans were counting on Trump's frenetic campaign pace in the final days to help them retain or perhaps even expand their narrow Senate majority.

Some GOP women won key races. Trump won Texas with more than 52% of the vote in 2016. That's in a House district that leans Republican but Democrats targeted with more than $1 million in spending. Only a handful of seats are viewed as potential pickup opportunities for Democrats, with the party hoping to flip seats in closely-watched races in states such as Arizona and Nevada, as well as longer shot attempts in Tennessee and Texas.

Democrats are most optimistic about the House, a sprawling battlefield extending from Alaska to Florida.

Six of the seven Democratic state senators unseated in the primaries were members of the now-defunct Independent Democratic Conference, a coalition of wealthy Senate Democrats.

Two issues more than any others were on voters' minds: 25 percent described health care and immigration as the most important issues in the election.

President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump are watching the results at the White House with friends and family. "The president has energized a staggering number of Americans at packed arenas and in overflow crowds at rallies across the country". The last polls were to close seven hours later in Alaska, with results trickling in through the evening.

Drawing attention like few other midterm contests, the election has pitted competing visions of the country against each other, with race often being front and centre, punctuated by two racially tinged crimes. Much of that has gone to boost turnout among younger voters, although he has produced a nationwide advertising campaign calling for Trump's impeachment.

Tuesday's result was a bitter outcome for Trump, a 72-year-old former reality TV star who campaigned for fellow Republicans on increasingly hostile anti-immigrant rhetoric and was accused of inciting violence in recent weeks. Democrats were favored to win more House seats than they now have, and they needed an overall gain of 23 to retake the House majority.

However, after an election campaign marred by extremist violence, opponents called the polls a chance to curtail a president they accuse of deliberately stirring racism and social division in the search for votes.

Analysts expect pressure on stocks if Democrats gain control of the House and a sharper downward reaction if they take the Senate too.

According to almost all pollsters, the Democrats have a good chance of winning the House, while the Republicans are likely to retain the Senate.

Some voting problems reported Problems with voting machines prevented Americans from casting ballots in a dozen states, U.S. rights advocates said, following complaints about registration problems, faulty equipment and intimidation received during early balloting. Moreover, 56 percent of those surveyed thought the country was on the wrong track and 41 percent said it was on the right track.

He is more popular in IN, where 53% of voters approved and 47% disapprove, according to the exit poll data. "I just love the deregulation and I just want to keep everything moving, because I'm loving it".

He said that many people are making the midterms all about President Trump, but in these elections - like many midterms - "politics is local".

"I have worked at this poll the last three elections and this is the biggest turnout ever", said Bev Heidgerken, 67, a volunteer at a polling place in Davenport, Iowa. "Now we just need to heal the country so they can all work together". His campaign team created an advertisement focused on the caravan that was so racially charged that major TV networks pulled it.
