Tragedy at Melbourne Cup as horse The CliffsofMoher put down after injury

The Godolphin stable, owned by uber-wealthy Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed, finally broke their Melbourne Cup drought.

Starting a $9 chance, Cross Counter settled in the second half of the field but producing a stirring finish to overhaul Marmelo ($12) who was initially being hailed the victor for Hugh Bowman.

Cross Counter won the Cup, the Charlie Appleby-trained stayer handing Australian jockey Kerrin McEvoy his third Cup triumph.

The 38-year-old from Streaky Bay, South Australia rode Brew to victory in the 2000 Melbourne Cup, and followed that win in 2016 with victory on board Almandin.

Cross Counter saluted at the fixed odds price of $9 with tab.com.au, while one lucky punter enjoyed a $[Aus] 500,000 windfall having placed a $50,000 wager at $10 on Monday.

Admire Rakti was a Japanese racehorse who collapsed and died from cardiac arrest at the Melbourne Cup in 2014.

It's the first time an England-trained horse has won the Cup, with Charlie Appleby winning after several attempts. I was back a bit further than I wanted but I knew I was full of running.

In a statement, RSPCA Australia spokesperson Jane Speechley said: "Our thoughts are with animal lovers across the country who have been affected by this loss, and confronted by the very real risks posed by racing to the horses involved".

Pahlaj Nihalani moves court after CBFC orders 20 cuts in Rangeela Raja
They have earlier worked together in films including " Ilzaam ", "Shola Aur Shabnam" and "Aankhen". Nihalani, on the other hand, was succeeded by Prasoon Joshi as the new CBFC chief in 2017.

The horse was euthanised after the race.

One of sport's greatest hoodoos is no more and the billion-dollar Sheikh, whose earliest memory was galloping through the desert on a white stallion with his father, can finally say he is a Melbourne Cup victor.

"I think it will mean a huge amount to him, but I imagine he will be just as pleased about the fact that this whole year has been really one series of continued successes", Anderson said of the Cup win.

Two of his three Cup wins have come since that move.

"It's one of the top events in the calendar every year and we will be just as enthusiastic about going for it in the future".

The Melbourne Cup and America's Kentucky Derby have long eluded Sheikh Mohammed.

"We'll be back with something (next year) I can assure you".
