‘Real army’ will defend Europe ‘against China, Russia, US’ - Macron

Macron was in the north-eastern French city of Verdun on Tuesday as part of centenary commemorations for the end of World War I.

"It is shocking that France can pay tribute to a man deemed unworthy of being French in a trial held in the name of the people", said Francis Kalifat, president of Crif, the body that represents France's 400,000-strong Jewish community.

As he prepares to host dozens of world leaders Sunday to mark 100 years since the World War I armistice, including Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the centrist French leader has been railing against rising nationalism in Europe and beyond.

Two decades later, with France poised to fall to Nazi German forces in World War Two, Petain was appointed prime minister of France.

Denouncing Macron's decision to "scare voters" by "raising the spectre of the 1930s", as "totally irresponsible", RN General Secretary Nicolas Bay said the French government was "alone, aside from the Spanish administration, in defending a model of mass immigration". Petain was the person who allowed the deportation of 76,000 French Jews to death camps.

Yet, the marshal has always been considered an excellent tactician during the Great War, not least for halting the German advance at Verdun in 1916.

The European elections are shaping up to be a major battle between centrist, pro-EU parties like Macron's LREM and far-right formations that want to stop immigration and globalization.

Critics were quick to criticize Macron, pointing to the role that Petain played in history later in life.

That belief is echoed by White House officials who also do not believe Whitaker needs to recuse himself, sources tell CNN . Whitaker has criticized Mueller's probe. "He was very, very highly thought of, and still is highly thought of".

The President will not be present at the Les Invalides ceremony on Saturday, but said that he would be represented by his Chief of Staff.

Macron's remarks have prompted a lively debate among European politicians.

As head of Vichy France, he replaced the country's motto of "Liberty, Equality and Fraternity" with the more paternalistic "Work, Family and Country".

Despite the controversy, some supporters of Mr Macron have come to his defence.

President Macron's battlefield tour will take in the River Somme as well as Verdun.

Macron and France will play host to many dignatories - including United States president Donald Trump - as commemorations are held to mark the 100th anniversary of World War One.

Macron has said he understands their grievances and promised relief, but added on Wednesday that "some people are honest in their anger, and some are insincere".
