Pep Guardiola defends Raheem Sterling over Shakhtar Donetsk penalty award

Manchester City have confirmed Raheem Sterling has signed a three-year contract extension, committing him to the Premier League champions until the end of the 2022-23 season.

Sources told ESPN FC earlier this month that the England worldwide had verbally agreed a new five-year deal that would make him one of the highest earners at the club.

"I think in this time I realised that it is unfair because I don't know why you should criticise Raheem", Guardiola told a news conference ahead of Sunday's Manchester derby. "My development here has been incredible", Sterling said after the signing.

"I'm delighted to sign", he told the City website.

The 23-year-old is now tied to City until 2023, with reports earlier this month claiming his extended contract would be worth £300,000 ($389,000) per week, making him England's best-paid player. That decision was perceived to be for money at the time but Carragher is convinced Sterling made the right choice as a youngster, even if it was bad news for The Reds.

Pochettino pleads for patience with ‘stunning’ new stadium
But Eddie Howe's men couldn't find a leveller in the second half as Newcastle claimed a second win in a row. You expect you are going to find a nice stadium, but when I saw the stadium I was like "wow", he said.

Certain fans never forgive a player for leaving their club to join a direct rival, but the trophies Sterling has since won with City more than justify his motives. It's really paid off for me and I'm really grateful. You want to try and develop and get better.

Sterling was one of Guardiola's standout players in City's record-breaking title run last season and has carried on that form this term with a string of impressive performances.

"With the facilities we've got here there's no reason not to".

'He's quick, strong and excellent in front of goal - everything a modern-day forward needs to excel.

Sterling has been directly involved in 40 Premier League goals since the start of last season (24 goals, 16 assists) which is more than any other player besides Liverpool star Mohamed Salah. "We are both in quite similar situations, we just keep going and going", the City manager said.
