Netflix is testing cheaper, mobile-only subscription plans

On Wednesday, Malaysian news outlet, The Star, reported that Netflix had launched a mobile-only subscription package in the country. The video-streaming giant said the same yesterday but did not give out an additional details on which other markets will see a test run of the same.

Why it matters: Netflix is experimenting with mobile-only plans that come at roughly half the cost of a standard plan.

We all want to spend less on subscriptions, but would you only watch Netflix on your mobile device to save that money?

News outlets are also awaiting information whether these budget-friendly subscription plans would be a permanent component of Netflix if they prove to be successful outside the United States.

Most know this, but the streaming network offers three pricing tiers with the cheapest tier at $7.99 per month, although it varies by country.

This move is aiming to make Netflix more accessible in a place where the company faces stiff competition.

And it says no further support should be provided for large-scale biomass power plants that are not deployed with CCS technology. The report, Biomass In A Low Carbon Economy, warned that recycling will need to be greatly stepped up.

During the two-day conference dubbed See What's Next Asia, Netflix announced 17 Asian originals including Thai-language originals, five animated series (which includes an animated adaptation of Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo's Trese graphic novel set in Manila), Indian originals, South Korean originals (this includes zombie historical epic, KINGDOM, which despite having a January 25, 2019 premiere date, has already been renewed for a second season) and a Chinese-language original from Taiwan (Triad Princess).

"Leaving prices where they are, we are a very premium service", Todd Yellin, Netflix's vice-president of product.

Still, growth has been slow in the region. High-definition video is not included in the plan.

There are a number of streaming services, both legal and illegal, as well as YouTube, that are now doubling down on their efforts to get a leg up in Asian markets with cheap, $3 to $4 plans that are appealing to the growing middle class. This is also valid for people using Netflix as well.

The company CEO Reed Hastings in a recent interview said that he sees India as a huge market and plans to gain around 100 million customers from the country in the coming years.
