Man taken to hospital after fending off great white shark with surfboard

Lee Jonsson, a 43-year-old teacher aide at a local school, was bitten Wednesday at Shelly Beach off Ballina in New South Wales state.

Cr Wright said even if the DPI hadn't decided not to use shark nets this summer, they would not have been in the water when a 42-year-old man was attacked while surfing just after 7am today.

The surfer was later transferred to Lismore Hospital where he was treated and is said to be in a stable condition.

The Department of Primary Industries confirmed on Thursday morning a 2.8 metre juvenile white shark that was caught in a SMART drumline at Shelly Beach had been tagged and released.

Original story: ALL beaches in the Ballina Shire have been closed for 24 hours after a shark attack this morning.

Police said the bite was not life threatening.

Officers from Richmond Police District attended the beach and liaised with Surf Life Saving NSW.

"It grabbed him on the leg and pulled him off the board", Ballina mayor David Wright told Sydney's 2GB radio, according to The Guardian.

Firefighters and first responders have arrived on scene and the Ventura County Sheriff's Office is working to secure the scene. They said that soon after the gunman opened fire, victims were running to a nearby petrol station to get help.

The initial attack caused an eight-inch cut on his calf. That's when he used the board to strike the shark.

But Cr Wright said he was confident in the measures now in place.

Rescue helicopter crew member Ben McCauley, who accompanied all three Cid Harbor shark attack victims on the 60-mile flights from Cid Harbor to Mackay Base Hospital, said his role had taken a personal toll. "We just don't need that", he said.

Ms Wishart said SLS NSW would also be monitoring the other Ballina beaches.

"Our drone operators will hit the skies to see if they can locate anything", she said.

"In the meantime we ask people to avoid going into the water at Ballina".

A man used his surfboard to fend off a shark that bit his leg near an Australian beach, two days after a fatal attack on the Great Barrier Reef.

Daniel Christidis, 33, was sharing a paddle board with a female friend in Cid Harbour in the Whitsundays when he was attacked about 5.35pm on Monday, and suffered severe injuries to his left thigh, right calf and left wrist.
