‘Lie detector’ for migrants at European Union borders slammed as pseudoscience

‘Lie detector’ for migrants at European Union borders slammed as pseudoscience

At checkpoints, Hungary, Latvia and Greece will stand the test of lie detector, which is controlled by a neural network.

It aims to facilitate faster border crossings for travelers while weeding out potential criminals or illegal crossings.

According to CNN, the AI-powered virtual border guard will become more "skeptical" if it thinks the traveler is lying, after it asks questions about name, age, date of birth and the objective of their trip.

"Artificial intelligence" lie detector programs will be tested on people arriving at airports in Hungary, Greece and Latvia, under a new, EU-funded pilot scheme created to partially automate the bloc's border control.

"We're employing existing and proven technologies-as well as novel ones-to empower border agents to increase the accuracy and efficiency of border checks", according to project coordinator George Boultadakis of European Dynamics in Luxembourg, who says iBorderCtrl system will "move beyond biometrics and on to biomarkers of deceit". Travelers will have to answer in front of the camera, and the system will analyze and evaluate dozens of microdelivery.

Khashoggi's body cut into pieces and 'dissolved'
The journalist was never to be seen again and Saudi Arabia has changed its narrative on the issue several times since then. Finally, on October 25, Saudi Arabia said the murder was " premeditated " based on information supplied by Turkey .

Developed with €5 million in European Union funding from partners across Europe, the pilot project will be operated by border agents in each of the trial countries and led by the Hungarian National Police.

The system will analyse the user's microexpressions to determine if they're lying, and they'll be flagged as either low or high risk.

If the AI suspects that the traveler is lying, then they will be going to under biometric information and will be passed on to a human agent who will then go to their review their application and make an amended decision.

"Border officials will use a hand-held device to automatically cross-check information, comparing the facial images captured during the pre-screening stage to passports and photos taken on previous border crossings", the commission said. Another part of the system utilizes fingerprinting, palm vein scanning, and face matching.

Mr Boudakis told Express.co.uk the system was "currently under lab testing" with plans to begin deploying it next month at Hungarian, Greek and Latvian land borders, with the pilot scheme scheduled to last nine months.
