Innocent People Killed in Mass Shooting

Innocent People Killed in Mass Shooting

It was the second mass shooting in less than two weeks, after a gunman killed 11 Jewish worshipers at a Pittsburgh synagogue on October 27. We are still looking for the shooter. The gunman was later found dead at the scene. Dean told reporters that there was no indication the suspect was targeting bar employees.

"I'm a Thousand Oaks resident", 19-year-old Erika Sigman said, according to the LA Times. He added that Helus was a "hard-working, dedicated Sheriff's Sergeant". The others killed have not been identified.

Dean said the other prior encounters were a traffic accident and an incident in which Long was the victim of a battery at a bar.

Police tell the Los Angeles Times that at least 30 shots were fired at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, which is about 40 miles west of Los Angeles.

Survivors described moments of panic and heroism. The weapon usually holds 10 rounds and one in the chamber, but the gunman used an extended magazine in this shooting, Dean said.

Witnesses say the suspect was dressed in all black, and forced his way into the bar after first shooting the bouncer.

Deputies are at Long's home, seeking to serve a search warrant, Dean said.

Erika Sigman, 19, was another witness.

He said both they both managed to escape. "It's a big thing for us", he said, explaining he was with several people who were also with him in Las Vegas.

KNBC-TV spoke to a man at a reunification center which had been set up for families. Hours into the tragedy no one had been reunified with a loved one. It was college night at the Borderline Bar & Grill, a popular country western bar.

Kuredjian said at around 0915 GMT (5pm Singapore time) that the shooter was still confined inside the premises, adding that he did not know if he had been subdued or shot. "I mean, he's a resident of this area, and I would have to - common sense would speculate that there was some reason he went here", said Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean. "To save other people". Helus was a 29 veteran of the force who had planned to retire in the next year. "Our hearts go out to his family and friends during this hard time", the department added.

Sergeant Helus and another officer from the Highway Patrol arrived at the scene of the massacre at 11.23pm last night - three minutes after the 911 call went out. He first shot a security guard at the front entrance, then deployed smoke bombs inside and opened fire, shooting at random.

I have been fully briefed on the bad shooting in California. The bar is near the campus.
