Iceland’s Christmas ad banned for being ‘too political’

Iceland's emotional Christmas advertisement featuring a cartoon orang-utan has been banned from television for being "too political" - a vetting body says it can not clear the Greenpeace-made film which highlights the plight of the orang-utan because it breaches guidelines.

Iceland Foods worked with Greenpeace to repurpose a film the environmental organization originally launched in August; the spot would become Iceland Foods' entry in Britain's annual Christmas advertising bonanza.

"You won't see our Christmas advert on TV this year, because it was banned".

According to Clearcast, the United Kingdom body responsible for making sure ads meet standards set by the 2003 Communications Act, an adorably animated orangutan lamenting the effects of deforestation fits the bill.

Christmas adverts are starting to pop up on TV as the festive season approaches but supermarket Iceland have been told their ad won't be televised.

Public calls to reduce palm oil in consumer products have mounted over the last several years, as rainforest destruction in areas like Malaysia lead to major threats to the survival of orangutans.

Earlier this year, Iceland became the first major United Kingdom supermarket to announce they are removing palm oil from all its own-brand products.

Trump clashes with 'rude, terrible' CNN reporter
The sparring started after Acosta asked Trump about the caravan of migrants heading from Latin America to the southern US border. At the press conference, NBC News reporter Peter Alexander tried to stand up for Acosta , saying he was a "diligent reporter".

Richard Walker, managing director for Iceland Food group said: "We wanted [the Greenpeace film] to be our signature campaign".

Say hello to Rang-tan.

"Whilst our advert sadly never made it to TV screens, we are hopeful that consumers will take to social media to view the film, which raises awareness of an important global issue".

He added: "Our commitment to help protect the home of orangutans remains extremely close to our hearts".

Supermarket Iceland's Christmas ad campaign has been banned from TV because it has fallen foul of political advertising rules.

Clearcast said in a press release on Friday: "We are concerned that it doesn't comply with the political rules of the BCAP code".

"The creative submitted to us is linked to another organisation who have not yet been able demonstrate complicate in this area".
