Chinese staff forced to drink urine and eat roaches

Chinese staff forced to drink urine and eat roaches

The post on social media site, Weibo, was made last week by an employee using hashtag "employees who failed to meet their goals forced to drink urine".

Managers at a home improvement firm in Southern China have been jailed for cruel and unusual punishment of workers in which staff were flogged and forced to drink urine and eat cockroaches for missing sales targets.

The company is reported to have a history of shaming and punishing its staff by making them drink toilet water, vinegar and shaving their heads.

Police are investigating the company in Guizhou province after videos of the incidents were posted on social media, the Zunyi Public Security Bureau said on its Weibo account.

Two of the company managers have been jailed for 10 days, while a third manager will spend five days in jail, Zunyi police said in a statement on Weibo.

England manager Gareth Southgate defends giving Wayne Rooney a final cap
Harry Kane has backed Wayne Rooney to captain England when he makes his surprise return to the worldwide fold next week. I understand that's caused a lot of debate but it's a small way of appreciating what he's given to his country.

At the Guizhou company, numerous punished showed little outward sign of unhappiness, according to state media, choosing instead to accept their fate.

The video explicitly shows staff holding their noses as they down large plastic cups full to the brim of yellow liquid, later confirmed to be urine.

The company had reportedly failed to pay their employees' salary for the past two months and staff was scared to speak up fearing they would lose the pay if they'd quit. The employee added that the firm threatened to reduce their severance pay should they resign from their jobs. Apple, Amazon and Samsung supplier HEG Technology have all been accused of child labour, forced overtime and low wages in the past, according to New York-based China Labour Watch.

Police in Zunyi county police arrested three managers and they were later sentenced to jail time.
