Bryce Harper Turned Down $300 Million Contract From Nationals

Bryce Harper Turned Down $300 Million Contract From Nationals

Harper, 26, reportedly rejected a 10-year, $300 million offer from Nationals in late September.

"We've had conversations and we utilized our exclusivity to negotiate with him late in the season through when he became eligible to sign with a team, " Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo told reporter Tuesday, according to ESPN. Importantly, both sides felt the offer was legitimate and respectful.

Harper will soon finally be available to sign with other teams after years of speculation about the Washington Nationals star's future.

Harper headlines one of the most valuable free-agent classes in Major League Baseball history, which also includes infielder Manny Machado, closer Craig Kimbrel and former Cy Young Award victor Dallas Keuchel. It turns out that he rejected a contract offer from the team that very day.

Given Harper's history with Washington, it is likely Boras will at least circle back with the Nationals before finalizing a free agent deal for Harper with another team. But if they do, it nearly certainly won't be that deal, and Mike Rizzo acknowledged Tuesday his team can not afford to wait around.

78 students kidnapped by gunmen from Christian school
There have been other kidnappings from schools in the region , but this is the largest number kidnapped at once. The mission school's discipline mistress, Ms Maureen Njei, said the abducted students were both boys and girls.

Specifics on the reported offer remain mum, but the Post had the following to say. They can not wait for Harper to make his decision - which many in the industry believe will come no sooner than the Winter Meetings in Las Vegas next month - and miss out on the market.

"I'm comfortable with the alternative (to Harper re-signing)", Rizzo added.

Boras did not counter, but word is the Nationals would go higher for a reasonable offer - though how much higher remains to be seen.

Zack Greinke ($US34 million), David Price ($US31 million) and Clayton Kershaw ($US31 million) all got more.

Average annual value would have been $30 million, USA Today Sports's Bob Nightengale reports.
