At least 11 dead as wildfires spread on both ends of California

Experts have also said forest management was not a factor in California's two most destructive fires: the Camp fire, which has burned more than 6000 structures this week in Paradise, and the Tubbs fire past year in wine country. Pieces of bodies were transported by bucket, while intact remains were carried in body bags.

The blaze had covered 100,000 acres and was 20-percent contained by Saturday morning. "They are a terrifying and deadly force of nature".

Cal Fire Captain Bill Murphy said winds have calmed down in the valley but there are "shifting, erratic winds" with speeds of up to 45mph along ridge tops.

More than 250,000 have been evacuated across the state of California, which is now battling three wildfires, fanned by strong winds.

Last month, after Trump rekindled his criticism of California's wildfire prevention steps, a spokesman for Brown said Trump's comments lacked credibility.

Hundreds of homes were believed destroyed in Paradise, California, some 145 km north of Sacramento, and officials feared the death toll could rise once crews put out the flames and inspect destroyed properties.

Maclean said an as-yet unspecified number of civilians and firefighters had been injured, and it could be days before authorities would know whether anyone had died.

President Donald Trump, weighing in on the emergency during a trip to France, said early on Saturday that "gross mismanagement of forests" was to blame.

Earlier, two people were found dead in a vehicle in Malibu as a fire forced the evacuation of that city's entire population.

Firefighters said that "pretty much all of the community", which is 180 miles north-east of San Francisco, had been destroyed.

Actor Martin Sheen, briefly reported missing by his actor son Charlie, was also forced to evacuate.

They were his first comments since the fires started, Fox News reported.

The entire upscale beach town of Malibu has been evacuated, and an historic movie site where Westerns were filmed has been destroyed. Rice reminded the president that wildfires are not unique to forests, and that they're sparked in populated areas and open fields fueled by vegetation, high winds, low humidity and geography.

Director Guillermo del Toro tweeted that Bleak House, his museum of horror movie memorabilia, was also in the path of the flames. About 250,000 homes are under evacuation orders across the region.

Jones said one of the town's two elementary schools, Paradise Elementary, burned down.
