Pompeo to meet Saudi crown prince on missing journalist

Pompeo to meet Saudi crown prince on missing journalist

Saudi Arabia previously called the allegation "baseless", but U.S. media reports suggest the Saudis may acknowledge Mr Khashoggi was killed there, perhaps as part of a botched interrogation.

What's likely to come from the Pompeo meeting?

The secretary of state and the king have now met in Riyadh.

While much of what was discussed has yet to be announced, the US State Department said that Mr Pompeo had used the time to thank the king for his "commitment to a thorough, transparent investigation" into Mr Khashoggi's disappearance.

During the initial consulate search, CNN reported on Monday that Saudi Arabia was preparing to acknowledge Khashoggi's death in a botched interrogation, after denying for two weeks any role in his disappearance.

"The king firmly denied any knowledge of it", Trump told reporters Monday.

Butler, who planned to promote his new movie "Hunter Killer", about a standoff between a USA submarine and Russian forces, said neither the US government nor the Navy asked him not to visit the country.

There is a lot at stake given the strength of Saudi-US ties. The US president has been pressing King Salman and Opec to boost production for weeks to drive down high crude oil prices, caused in part by the coming re-imposition of oil sanctions on Iran after the US withdrawal from that's country's nuclear deal with world powers. Both reports cited anonymous people said to be familiar with the Saudi plans.

The kingdom has not responded to repeated requests for comment from The Associated Press.

Pompeo arrived at a royal palace in Riyadh on Tuesday.

He was then asked if he believes Turkey has such material.

What is this USA media line about?

Khashoggi has written extensively for the Post about Saudi Arabia, criticizing its war in Yemen, its recent diplomatic spat with Canada and its arrest of women's rights activists after the lifting of a driving ban for women.

CNN said the Saudis may argue the operation was conducted without clearance and those responsible would be held accountable.

Saudi Arabia May Admit Killing Khashoggi

The Khashoggi family in Saudi Arabia issued a statement calling for an "independent and impartial global commission".

Iran, as the regional rival to Saudi Arabia, would be the prime beneficiary if the Saudis were to lose their defensive USA umbrella. "He may meet with all of them together", Trump said. He had this guy murdered in a consulate in Turkey and to expect me to ignore it.

The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will visit Turkey, the Turkish media reported October 16. In private there may well be some strong words, in public both countries may want to present a united stand.

"This is a fear we've had for a long time. that the crown prince is a young and aggressive guy that would overestimate how much room he had to do things".

A Turkish diplomatic source said the investigators planned to widen their search on Tuesday to the residence of the Saudi consul.

Turkey rejected that offer.

Turkey had wanted to search the consulate for days. It is not clear whether that happened.

A Turkish foreign ministry source said the police would search the consulate again on Tuesday as well as the consul's residence, which Turkish television has previously reported could be linked to Khashoggi's disappearance.

What allegedly happened in Istanbul?

He was last seen on surveillance footage entering the main entrance of the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul. Security cameras on the surrounding streets did not see him leave by foot, Turkish officials say.

Earlier on Monday, investigators entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

The sources said the interrogation was meant to lead to his enforced return to Saudi Arabia.

In protest of Khashoggi's disappearance, several US businesses leaders have pulled out of next week's Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh, dubbed "Davos in the Desert", after the annual meeting of world economic interests in Switzerland.
