Children's Hospital of Philadelphia reports two recent cases of polio-like illness

According to UH, AFM is a rare condition that attacks the nervous system, specifically the spinal cord, and can cause paralysis.

The Washington Department of Heath says all the children are 6 or younger. Until then, doctors are treating the cases as if they are AFM. The children are residents of King County (2), Pierce County (1), Lewis County (1), and Snohomish County (1).

The Illinois cases are preliminary diagnoses and only the U.S. Centers for Disease Control can confirm the diagnosis, according to Arnold.

Cases of a paralyzing condition that affects mostly children appear to be on the rise across the country, an unofficial survey by NBC News has found.

Being up to date on polio vaccinations is one way to protect yourself and your family from AFM, says the CDC.

In 2014, 120 children were diagnosed with AFM.

"It is sudden onset of weakness in an arm, leg, face or the muscles that help us swallow and we use to speak", Dr. Amaran Moodley told ABC News.

A spokeswoman for Children's Mercy said in an email that they have notified the health department and are working with the CDC to learn more about the illness.

"Surveillance has shown us that AFM cases generally peak in the months of September and October", the Nevada state health department said in a bulletin sent to healthcare providers in August.

"The outbreak in 2014, of the tests we did that year, about a third of them with a certain virus that we think was causing that outbreak", he said.

The disease is not new but the cause remains unknown.

WSIL- An alert for parents health officials say there's a serious respiratory virus spreading across the state. It again increased in 2016, with 149 cases confirmed in 38 states and the District of Columbia. In addition to the pair of cases at CHOP, three cases are also being treated in Pittsburgh, 6ABC reported. "We haven't completed our own investigations yet to confirm it's AFM so we haven't reported to the CDC", said Sherri Davidson, Alabama's state epidemiologist.
