Windows 10 Test Halts Competing Browser Installs, Suggests Edge Instead

Windows 10 Test Halts Competing Browser Installs, Suggests Edge Instead

The company recently announced the new iteration of Windows 10 will arrive duly under the name "Windows 10 October 2018 update" in October.

But the claims made in Microsoft's attempts to dissuade users from installing Chrome and Firefox are harder to justify.

Microsoft already promotes the message that "Microsoft Edge is the faster, safer browser on Windows 10 and it is already installed on your PC", when you search for Firefox or Chrome via Microsoft Edge. This pop-up won't stop you from installing your third-party browser, as it gives you the change to "Install Anyway", but it also gives you the option of opening Edge instead. Interrupting installations only frustrates and angers the end user as well as negatively impacting trust.

Microsoft has been pushing its Edge web browser quite a lot in Windows 10.

Rain forces postponement at Indy, sets up Monday NASCAR doubleheader
Rain washed out the entire weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the final race before the playoffs was moved to Monday. This almost became an issue in last year's Brickyard 400 after a one-hour, 47-minute rain delay took place during the race .

While Bleeping Computer has not been able to independently get this Edge promotion to display, Microsoft has stated that this is indeed a test they are performing with Windows Insiders. You are then given an inviting blue button to open Edge or a nasty grey one to install the browser you went out of your way to download.

The tech giant also tried a similar push to force Windows 10 Mail users to use Edge for all email links, but the company reversed the change after a backlash, the report noted. It is worth noting that it is a preview release, which will not be available to the general public for another month or so. As this is just an Insider build, we can only hope the interruption doesn't make it through testing and into the main branch. The Windows Insider Program enables Microsoft to test different features, functionality and garner feedback before rolling out broadly. "Customers remain in control and can choose the browser of their choice". Thankfully, The Verge updated that this prompt is only running during the test period and will not appear in the final build of the October 2018 Update.

Interestingly, Mozilla clearly did not appreciate Microsoft's move.

We get it, Microsoft, you want everyone to use Edge. "Microsoft should focus on building great products instead and win users".
