US approves sales of aircraft and Patriot missiles to S. Korea: Yonhap

U.S. Army Patriot missile air defence artillery batteries are seen at U.S. Osan air base in Osan, south of Seoul April 5, 2013.

According to the Reuters, the U.S. State Department has approved possible military sales worth $2.6 billion to South Korea, including six P-8A Poseidon maritime reconnaissance aircraft.

The sale, if finalized, would involve six P-8A Poseidon aircraft worth $2.1 billion and 64 Patriot ballistic missile interceptors worth $501 million, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a release.

A second contract covers 64 Patriot missiles and support worth US$501 million, the agency said.

The P-8A Poseidon, made by Boeing, can be used for intelligence and reconnaissance as well as for anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare.

Former Fairfax journalist Mike Carlton stated that editing any sound or vision of parliament is not permitted. "It's a humbling experience to be recognised by a high official (either Scott or his people thought of me)".

DSCA said the proposed deals, which were informed to Congress on Thursday, will enable South Korea to enhance its missile defense capacity and support United States national security targets by improving Seoul's maritime capabilities.

The Patriots, to be made by Texas-based Lockheed-Martin, are created to intercept tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and other airborne threats.

South Korea said in February that it would procure from overseas new maritime patrol aircraft with stronger anti-submarine capabilities to better respond to the threat of North Korea's submarine-launched ballistic missiles.

It will also "increase the defensive capabilities of the (South Korean) Military to guard against hostile aggression and shield the allies who train and operate within South Korea's borders".

USA ally South Korea is engaged in talks with North Korea on improving relations and the United States is involved in its own diplomatic efforts with North Korea on denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.
