Trump Falsely Claims 3000 Puerto Ricans Did Not Die After Hurricane Maria

Public health experts have estimated that almost 3,000 perished because of the effects of Hurricane Maria.

In this September 4, 2018 photo, Gloria Rosado Ortiz holds a photograph of her late husband Ernesto Curiel in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on September 4, 2018. On Oct. 29, he died of a heart attack.

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora expressed frustration Thursday when asked about President Donald Trump downplaying the number of people who died in the aftermath of a hurricane that devastated Puerto Rico one year ago, calling the President's tweets "disrespectful".

"They hired.GWU Research to tell them how many people had died in Puerto Rico (how would they not know this?)", Trump added.

That includes one report that estimated the death toll was 2,975 - a figure that the government of Puerto Rico has adopted as the official count.

A Government Accountability Office report last week confirmed many of those findings, and also noted that 54 per cent of the FEMA workers deployed previous year were serving in a role they were not qualified to perform. The study said the original estimates were so low because doctors on the island had not been trained to properly classify deaths after a natural disaster.

The deaths fell in two categories: direct and indirect.

"Our results show that Hurricane Maria was a very deadly storm, one that affected the entire island but hit the poor and the elderly the hardest", the statement read.

Tottenham , who lost 2-1 to Watford last time out, host Liverpool on Saturday lunchtime. With England it's maybe not the best conditions for a striker to give the best.

They extrapolated that data to estimate 4,600 people died as a direct result of the hurricane, including those who were not able to access vital medical treatment. We will never know how many we lost. We are committed to the health of the population. "But I don't agree with a lot of stuff that he says about us". Both have made outreach to Florida's growing Puerto Rican population a focus of their campaigns. It's not that hurricanes can't kill that many people or more. "When Trump arrived in Puerto Rico, he threw paper towels at the people when they were actually asking for help and while he was doing that, people were dying all around him", said Ortiz. "So I have no reason to dispute those numbers".

San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz responded: "Simply put: delusional, paranoid, and unhinged from any sense of reality".

President Trump has aggressively defended the administration's response to last year's hurricanes and called the efforts to help the people of Puerto Rico an "unsung success".

As of time of writing, five deaths in North Carolina are being attributed to Hurricane Florence.

Trump's angry response to criticism of his handling of Maria came as even former White House officials questioned his approach.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency reportedly told the CBS News correspondent David Begnaud that it provided the water to the central government in response to Hurricane Maria in 2017, but it is unclear what kept the water from being distributed.
