Tennis Umpires Fear 'No One Has Their Back' After Serena Williams Controversy

Tennis Umpires Fear 'No One Has Their Back' After Serena Williams Controversy

Osaka and Williams were together after the match as Osaka was awarded the trophy for winning.

Much of the criticism of Williams has centred on how her actions had spoiled a precious moment for Osaka, who was even moved to apologise for beating the home favourite to a NY crowd angrily booing Ramos. Amid the crowd booing, Williams tried to reassure the new champion that the boos were not aimed at her.

That anger would later cost her the game, and ultimately the match - although Osaka was clearly the better player on the night and would've probably taken out the match regardless.

Carlos Ramos, the chair umpire who penalized Serena Williams during the women's U.S. Open Final last week, has finally spoken out about the incident.

Afterwards, Williams suggested that Ramos and other umpires are tolerant of worse criticism from male players. Williams, clearly unhappy with the ruling, went on to berate Ramos for his judgment, repeatedly demanding that he apologize for branding her a cheater.

Williams was fined $17,000 in total: $10,000 for verbal abuse, $4,000 for the coaching violation, and $3,000 for racket abuse. The third and final penalty came as Williams continued to castigate the umpire, saying, "You stole a point from me".

But before that, Osaka appeared on The Ellen Show, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, who tried to set her up with her crush, Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan. Williams told Ramos. "You owe me an apology".

"I know the way that I was brought up, people tell me I act kind of Japanese so I guess there is that".

The International Tennis Federation did wholeheartedly back Ramos, saying in its statement that "Carlos Ramos is one of the most experienced and respected umpires in tennis".

"At the end of the day, I hope everybody understands and celebrates Naomi because she's the U.S. Open champion and that's pretty dope".

Ramos spoke out for the first time about the fracas, telling the Portuguese newspaper Tribuna Expresso that he was fine.

The USTA praised Williams for her conduct after the match, whereas WTA CEO Steve Simon said that "there should be no difference in the standards of tolerance provided to the emotions expressed by men vs. women".

"It's an unhappy situation but à la carte refereeing doesn't exist", added the 47-year-old seasoned umpire. "Do not worry about me!"

Ramos said he has received hundreds of messages of support.

He also chose to stay indoors the day after to avoid any angry fans.
