Manafort to cooperate with Mueller investigation in plea deal

The special counsel won another notch in its belt Friday by securing a plea deal and cooperation agreement with Paul Manafort, former campaign chairman for Trump, in the ongoing Russian Federation investigation. Suspicion also arose from the fact that U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson pushed back the pretrial hearing from Wednesday to Friday with no explanation-I guess now we have our reason.

At the hearing, government prosecutor Andrew Weissman announced that Manafort had struck a "cooperation agreement" and would plead guilty to charges related to his Ukrainian political consulting work.

In addition to the witness tampering counts, Manafort is formally charged with acting as an unregistered foreign agent, conspiring to launder money and lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department about the nature of his work. Manafort has already been convicted on several counts of federal bank and tax fraud brought by the special counsel. The president has signaled that he's sympathetic to Manafort's cause, and in comments to Politico, Giuliani said a plea without a cooperation agreement wouldn't foreclose the possibility of a pardon.

"This had absolutely nothing to do with the President or his victorious 2016 Presidential campaign".

Trump last month praised Manafort for not entering into an agreement with prosecutors, as the president's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen had.

Manafort pleads guilty in cooperation deal;... Other counts were dropped.

Rudy Giuliani, Trump's attorney, echoed that.

National security reporter and legal analyst Marcy Wheeler said she believes that Mueller made this deal "pardon proof in a couple ways that are going to become obvious in the near future". The stunning development that Manafort will assist prosecutors who went after him on a raft of money laundering and tax charges. Rumors first began earlier this week, when The Washington Post reported on Tuesday, Sept. 11, that sources close to the matter said Manafort was in talks about a possible plea deal.

In total, Mueller has indicted or extracted guilty pleas from more than 30 people and three companies. He is yet to be sentenced in that case.

Kevin M. Downing, an attorney for Manafort, also said this summer that there was "no chance" his client would flip and cooperate with prosecutors.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders insisted that the Manafort case was unrelated to Trump. But the plea nonetheless makes Manafort the latest associate of Trump, a president known to place a premium on loyalty among subordinates, to admit guilt and co-operate with investigators in hopes of leniency.

In a plea deal to avert a second trial on money laundering and illegal lobbying charges, Manafort agreed to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy against the United States and another count of obstruction of justice.

In-person jury selection for his Washington trial was set to start Monday, with opening statements scheduled for September 24 before U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson.

That includes Manafort's former deputy, Rick Gates, who testified against Manafort in Virginia.

The main focus of prosecutors in the second trial was the allegation that Manafort lobbied on behalf of Ukrainian politicians without registering under the Foreign Agents Registration Act. The jury was deadlocked on the remaining 10 counts, which ended in mistrial.
