How Wilmington, N.C., Is Preparing As Hurricane Florence Gets Stronger

Millions are being told to evacuate as the North and SC coasts prepares for the arrival of Hurricane Florence, a Category 4 storm that continues to strengthen into "an extremely unsafe major hurricane through Thursday night". "We are with you!" he tweeted Monday afternoon, shortly after South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster ordered the mandatory evacuation of the state's coastline beginning at noon Tuesday.

The 1st effects were already being seen on barrier islands Monday as risky rip currents and seawater flowed over the state highway. In the six decades since then, many thousands of people have moved to the coast. If Florence slows to a crawl just off the coast, it could bring torrential rain to the Appalachian mountains and as far away as West Virginia, causing flash floods, mudslides and other risky conditions.

The "major" hurricane was about 845 kilometres south-southeast of Bermuda on Monday and moving toward land at approximately 20 km/h, according to an advisory from the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

NHC Director Ken Graham also warned of "staggering" amounts of rainfall that may extend hundreds of miles inland and cause flash flooding across the mid-Atlantic region.

"It's not just the coast", Graham said.

"We expect it to be at least a major hurricane at landfall", he said.

By Noon EDT Monday, Florence had top sustained winds of 130 miles per hour (195 kph).

"To the incredible citizens of North Carolina, South Carolina and the entire East Coast - the storm looks very bad!"

"The centre of Florence will move over the southwestern Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Bahamas Tuesday and Wednesday, and approach the southeastern coast of the USA on Thursday", the NHC said.

Florence could stall out after striking the coast, forecaster say. Currently, Florence has winds of 140 miles per hour (220 kilometers/hour), making it a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, the National Hurricane Center reported.

The governors of North and SC and Virginia declared states of emergency far ahead of the approaching storm.

Cooper and his counterparts in South Carolina, Virginia and Maryland all declared states of emergency.

North Carolina governor Roy Cooper said his state was "in the bullseye" of the storm.

With Hurricane Florence spinning through the Atlantic Ocean and threatening to slam into SC later this week, Gov. Henry McMaster ordered mandatory evacuations for the state's entire coastline beginning at noon Tuesday.

All interests along the coasts of the Southeast and mid-Atlantic are being put on alert for a potential strike from Category 4 Hurricane Florence during the second half of the week.

State offices will be closed in 26 counties, including Horry and Georgetown counties, as well as schools on Tuesday until further notice.

Monday is the climatological peak date of hurricane season, the height of the eight-week period when the most powerful storms usually form, CNN meteorologist Pedram Javaheri said.

Florence became the first Category 4 hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic season last week but later weakened due to a zone of strong wind shear and cooler waters.

"I've been doing this since 1983", Roberts said as he completed an order for another 18-wheeler full of supplies.
