George Papadopoulos: Ex-Trump advisor jailed in Russian Federation inquiry

George Papadopoulos, a former adviser to the Donald Trump campaign, was sentenced to 14 days in prison in district court for the District of Columbia on Friday after he pleaded guilty to lying to federal agents investigating ties between Russian operatives and the campaign.

Prosecutors said the lies Papadopoulos told slowed the investigation and prevented the FBI from arresting Mifsud before he could leave the United States.

"I made a awful mistake, but I am a good man who is eager for redemption", Papadopoulos said.

During the hearing, Papadopoulos' attorney Thomas Breen argued that "The President of the United States hindered this investigation more than George Papadopoulos ever did", and that Papadopoulos "was unsophisticated, he was naive, and he was a fool".

"Judge said he believed Papadopoulos was genuinely remorseful but didn't agree to a probation sentence because he needed to send a message about the seriousness of lying to the FBI", Cheney wrote in a subsequent tweet.

Papadopoulos, a young oil and gas consultant, was the first Trump official to plead guilty and cooperate in the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US election.

Among those contacts were London-based professor Joseph Mifsud, who told him the Russians had "dirt" on Trump's Democratic presidential rival Hillary Clinton in the form of "thousands of emails". "I don't know him", Trump said.

A worker gestures as a crane lifts goods onto a cargo ship, at a port in Lianyungang, Jiangsu province, China, May 31, 2018. China has threatened retaliation, which could include action against USA companies operating there.

That sparked a counterintelligence investigation that has became the ongoing effort led by former FBI Director Mueller to get to the bottom of Russia's attack on the 2016 election - and whether any Americans conspired with those efforts.

In hindsight, he said in court, he recognizes that was wrong and "might have harmed the investigation".

U.S. investigators were only alerted to Papadopoulos's activities in mid-2016 after he told Australia's ambassador to London, Alexander Downer, about his talks with Mifsud during a late-night drinking session in a London pub.

Prosecutors did not recommend a sentence for Papadopoulos, but said up to six months' jail time was appropriate saying he had lied repeatedly to federal investigators and had not provided substantial cooperation to them.

The FBI canceled the meeting when it discovered that Papadopoulos had sat down for a media interview about the case.

Papadopoulos brought the idea up at a campaign meeting with Trump and future Attorney General Jeff Sessions, with Sessions later testifying before Congress that he had "pushed back" against the idea.
