Dallas police officer fatally shoots man after entering wrong apartment

Police said they are conducting a joint investigation with the Dallas County district attorney's office.

Investigators are still trying to piece together what happened but say it appears that after working a full shift, the officer went home to her apartment complex, the Southside Flats in the 1200 block of South Lamar, but went to the wrong unit.

Authorities identified the victim as Botham Shem Jean, a native of Saint Lucia who worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers in Dallas after graduating from Harding University in Arkansas. Police would not say whether the officer fired her weapon because she thought Jean was an intruder or for some other reason.

Dallas Police Chief Rene Hall said in the interest of being as transparent as possible, she has invited the Texas Rangers to take over the investigation.

"How can you make a mistake like that, getting into someone else's apartment?" an 80-year-old woman who identified herself only as Raquel said. Jean, originally from the island of St. Lucia, came to the USA to study at the Christian Harding University in Arkansas, per NBC, where he is remembered as "always friendly, always smiling".

"The entire Harding family grieves today for the loss of Botham, who has meant so very much to us", the university said in a statement.

The Israeli air force attacked Syria
The head of a hospital in Baniyas said eight had been injured as a result of the strikes. Syrian air defences reportedly managed to shoot down five of the missiles.

They say Jean was an alum who "frequently led worship for chapel and for campus events". That July, he went to work for PwC in risk assurance. According to Chief Hall, it is unclear what the interaction was between the officer and Jean.

He was from the Caribbean island of St. Lucia and the oldest son of a former government minister, and his mother was the permanent secretary of the ministry of education, innovation, gender relations and sustainable development, according to the St. Lucia Times.

Authorities have not said how the officer got into Jean's home, or whether his door was open or unlocked.

"This is a awful tragedy", the company said in a statement.

Jean worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Dallas, an global company that does assurance, tax and advisory work for companies around the world. So there's a lot of information I understand you guys want but this is all we can give you at this time, ' he said.
