'Carnivore' sharks have a stomach for greens

'Carnivore' sharks have a stomach for greens

"Bonnethead sharks are not only consuming copious amount of seagrass but they are actually capable of digesting and assimilating seagrass nutrients, making them clear omnivores", the researchers wrote in their study.

Researchers were previously aware of bonnethead sharks munching on the marine plant but "it has been assumed by most that this consumption was incidental and that it provided no nutritional value", says Leigh.

Unswayed by this popular opinion, the Leigh and her team made a decision to run an experiment to see if bonnethead sharks were, in fact, capable of digesting and acquiring nutrients from seagrass.

In her previous study, Ms Leigh discovered that showed bonnetheads were digesting 56 percent of the organic matter in seagrass, similar to young sea turtles. These showed that the fish successfully digested the seagrass with enzymes that broke down components of the plants, such as starch and cellulose.

"Given that bonnetheads have a digestive system that resembles that of closely-related species that we know to be strict carnivores, we need to re-think what it means to have a "carnivorous gut", Leigh said.

Scientists have long known that bonnethead sharks have snacked on seagrass, they just weren't quite sure whether it passed through their digestive system unabsorbed, gobbled up as a side effect of grazing for other fish.

Contrary to the vicious image associated with sharks, not all of them are meat lovers.

British Airways website compromised, customer data stolen
BA apologised in July after technology issues caused dozens of its flights to and from London's Heathrow Airport to be cancelled. The airline is scarce with details at the moment because the investigation is ongoing and it's too soon to evaluate the damages.

The research was published Wednesday in Proceedings of the Royal Society B. The findings were also presented at the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology's annual meeting in January. Scientists have confirmed that one of the most common sharks in the world is an omnivore.

"The notion that bonnethead sharks might have a major impact on seagrass beds through the seagrass they consume directly as juveniles is-in my opinion-unsubstantiated speculation".

Bonnethead sharks (Sphyrna tiburo), which live in the coastal waters around the Atlantic and Gulf coast of the United States, are very well known to scientists.

"There are other sharks that inhabit these waters, so it could be also a competition thing", she said.

The downside for humans is that bonnethead sharks look a little bit like hammerheads, so if you're splashing around there may not be time to distinguish one from the other.

We show that a coastal shark, previously thought to be exclusively carnivorous, is digesting seagrass with at least moderate efficiency, which has ecological implications.[within] fragile seagrass ecosystems. To find the answer, captive bonnetheads were fed a largely seagrass-based diet.

"Seagrasses are extremely important ... they produce oxygen, they create a nursery for many commercially important fish species, they filter toxins out of the water, and more", Leigh told Gizmodo.
