Mr Skomal holds a long pole with a GoPro camera attached to capture footage of the shark.

Last month, researchers from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science's Shark Survey were surprised when they caught a 2.6-metre shark only to watch as a 4.4m great white dived out of the water and took a bite out of it.

"Holy c**p, it dove right out of the water", the captain yells.

According to the Boston Globe, the video shows biologist Greg Skomal standing on the pulpit of a research boat.

"Confirmed shark sighting again the same area", Cape Cod National Seashore officials reported at 12:52 p.m. on the app operated by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, a nonprofit group conducting research on the apex predator along with the state Division of Marine Fisheries and Gregory Skomal, the state's shark expert. "Did you see that?" he says as he immediately returns to looking for the shark.

It was recorded off the coast of Wellfleet, MA.

"While encounters like this one are rare, this video shows that they're certainly possible", said the conservancy's post.

"White sharks are wild and unpredictable animals", they said.

Video released by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy on social media shows just how close the shark came towards the remarkably calm researcher.

While the great white filmed off the MA coastline was around a fifth the size of a megladon, its dramatic appearance is a reminder of never becoming complacent in shark waters.
