U.S. imposes sanctions on Russia for nerve agent attack in UK

The action is aimed at punishing President Vladimir Putin's government for having "used chemical or biological weapons in violation of global law", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement.

"The government of the Russian Federation has used chemical or biological weapons in violation of worldwide law", US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement.

Former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter were poisoned by Novichok, a military-grade nerve agent, in Salisbury in March.

The new sanctions, details of which were not released, were to take effect following a 15-day Congressional notification period, she said.

An official judgement on the Skripal affair has tonight been passed by the the US State Department, paving the way for new sanctions against Russian Federation.

Sanctions waivers are in place for certain key sectors, including space flight activities and commercial aviation safety, the official said.

Wednesday's announcement reaffirmed the accusation from the U.S. that Russian Federation had used Novichok against its own nationals. The statement anticipated the sanctions would go into effect around August 22 in line with the Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Elimination Act of 1991.

Washington had already expelled dozens of Russian diplomats from the United States over the poisoning.

Two more people - Dawn Sturgess and Charlie Rowley - were subsequently treated for exposure to novichok after Ms Sturgess reportedly picked up a discarded perfume bottle thought to have contained the agent.

Later on, London claimed that the Novichok-class toxin had been developed in Russian Federation.

President Trump met with Putin at a summit in July.

While Trump has cast doubt on USA intelligence agencies' finding that Russia interfered in the election and sought to help him win, his administration has repeatedly expanded US sanctions on Russia as top officials have reaffirmed the findings on Russian election interference.

Paul said the letter "emphasised the importance of further engagement in various areas including countering terrorism, enhancing legislative dialogue and resuming cultural exchanges".
