Saudi official says Canada dispute won't affect oil sales

Khalid Al-Falih, Minister of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources of Saudi Arabia, said oil sales will not be affected by politics.

Trudeau noted that his Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland had "a long conversation" on Tuesday with her counterpart Adel al-Jubeir to try to resolve the dispute. His case long has been raised by global human rights groups and Western diplomats, including Canadians, who have called on Saudi Arabia to free him.

After Riyadh ordered it students studying in Canada to come home and expelled Canada's ambassador for interfering in its domestic affairs, the Financial Times said the Saudi central bank had told companies managing its assets overseas to start selling Canadian stocks and bonds. It is a country that has great significance in the world, that is making progress in the area of human rights.

Canada called for her release back to Ottawa where her family resides, but Saudi Arabia refused.

"Very alarmed to learn that Samar Badawi, Raif Badawi's sister, has been imprisoned in Saudi Arabia", the August 3 tweet read.

"There is nothing to mediate".

He said: "Canada made a mistake and they know what they need to do to correct it". He was arrested in Saudi Arabia in 2012 and later sentenced to 1,000 lashes and 10 years in prison for insulting Islam while blogging.

As US slaps on fresh tariffs, China fires back
The trade balance between the two countries, which is at the center of the tariffs tussle, continued to be in favor of China. China deprives US companies of the ability to set market-based terms in licensing and other technology-related negotiations.

That arrest came after more than a dozen women's rights campaigners were detained and accused of undermining national security and collaborating with enemies of the state.

Since Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman stepped up to rule, Riyadh has adopted an increasingly assertive stance to its foreign and domestic affairs, as well as a very low tolerance for criticism against its policies.

Since rising to power in 2015, Prince Salman has blockaded Saudi Arabia's neighbour Qatar, led a military intervention in Yemen and increased tensions with Iran.

But the country's state-owned airline has suspended flights to Toronto.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he doesn't want bad relations with Saudi Arabia but added that Canada will continue to speak out on human rights.

Saudi Arabia's actions mirror its regional blockade imposed on Qatar a year ago, where Saudi and its regional allies took monetary action against the Gulf state, insisting they remove Qatari investments from their portfolios.

The main impact could be on the Canadian division of General Dynamics, based in London, Ontario, which signed a $15 billion deal with Saudi Arabia in 2014 to export its light-armored vehicles to the kingdom.

Saudi Arabia is Canada's biggest trade partner in the Gulf region. Bilateral trade between the two nations is US$3 billion a year.
