Parasite found in McDonald's salads sickens almost 400 people, FDA says

McDonald's released a statement on July 13 saying they had been in contact with public health officials notifying them about an increase in Cyclospora infections in Iowa and IL.

The illnesses have been reported in 15 states, including IL. They have "Best by", "Enjoy by", "Best if sold by", or "Sell by" dates ranging from July 18 through July 23, according to the CDC.

Federal officials said this week that now almost 400 people in 15 states have been sickened by a parasite infection that's been linked to McDonald's salads.

Patients from Connecticut, Tennessee and Virginia bought their contaminated salads while traveling in IL.

The cyclospora parasite causes intestinal illness in people who consumed contaminated food or water. At least 16 of the sick individuals have been hospitalized. It can take people up to a week after ingesting the contaminated food to start feeling symptoms, and many cyclospora infections take weeks to manifest.

The infection can last anywhere from a few days to a few months.

On July 13, McDonald's announced it voluntarily stopped selling salads at the impacted restaurants, including Kentucky.

Fresh Express says the bad salads were only sold to McDonald's and were not shipped to grocers.

In a statement, Fresh Express said it issued a "precautionary recall" on July 27th. The company is now in the midst of switching to a different lettuce-mix supplier.

"McDonald's is committed to the highest standards of food safety and quality control", the company said.
